J. D. Cummings

J.D. Cummings used to cut his high school French class and head for the school darkroom. In the years following college his hobby became his profession, and he has been involved in many different areas of photography. He has been a technician in an industrial darkroom, a manager of a photo lab, and has worked in several camera shops. For more than 20 years he has photographed professionally and he enjoys the wide variety of challenges that freelance work provides.

He photographs for corporate clients and individuals. In addition to inventions, fashions, product photography, and special events, his subjects have included Senators, Congressmen, and his next door neighbor. He especially enjoys teaching photography. He has lectured to high school and college students and teachers over the last dozen years, and has been on the faculty of the Gibbes Museum Studio since 1994. His approach to teaching is based on the idea that photographers – who work with light – should be lighthearted about it.
