Center for Photography

Second Monday | May 12 | 7 p.m.
Brownie Harris

On Monday, May 12 at 7:00p.m the Charleston Center for Photography will host Brownie Harris.

"Luminari
es of our Time"

Throughout his career, Brownie has focused on people and what they do.
Whether he is photographing the luminaries of our time, from presidents to prima ballerinas, or ordinary people at work in factories and on farms, his

goal is to show their dignity. Whether working with a celebrity ego, such as David Brinkley or John F. Kennedy, Jr.,or a camera-shy unknown, Brownie approaches all his subjects with the same respect.

The Challenge of finding and showing the hidden beauty in the working world drew Brownie to corporate photography. He can quickly spot the area of visual interest in any subject and bring it to life with expert lighting. Even when the location has nothing to offer, Brownie can build a picture that tells the story.

After receiving a BFA in Communication Arts & Design from Virginia Commonwealth University, Brownie headed to New York City, where he drove a taxi, painted lofts, and served as a photo assistant. He landed a job as a graphic designer of Educational Broadcasting Corporation. Soon after, at the age of 22, he created the photography department for WNET/Thirteen/PBS Public Broadcasting Service, the area's public television station. For more than 20 years, Brownie has specialized in annual reports and corporate advertising, traveling the world on assignment. After 23 years in New York and Paris, he is now based in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Cornices of Charleston

Cornices of Charleston is a unique collaboration between photographer Jack Alterman and painter Susan Romaine. By capturing the cornices of Charleston's
unique architectural styles they have
provided a new view of old familiar places. With an introduction by artist John Carroll Doyle and a foreword by author and historian Harlan Greene the context of what you are seeing springs to life as you 'fly' down the streets of Charleston
